Art and the City | Max Planck Institute

I'm very honored to be one of the speakers at the 6th International ART and the CITY Conference at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (MPI-MMG) Göttingen.

It is a pleasure to be able to speak about my practice with the great minds in this lineup.

It is still possible to register as a visitor for the conference until May 31 here.

Contemporary Art Across Political Divides: Difficult Conversations | Cambridge Scholars Publishing

It's finally out! It was an honor to contribute to Contemporary Arts Across Political Divides: Difficult Conversations.

Special thanks to editors, Tijen Tunali and Alla Myzelev and Cambridge Scholars Publishing for their support in bringing this project to life.

Seeing the paper Malak Yacout and I co-wrote, "Entre Quatro Paredes", included with the writings of these other brilliant minds is such a rush, as is using the soft power of art to open important conversations.

"Entre Quatro Paredes (Between Four Walls)" was written about the performance by the same name Atsuko Mochida, Malak Yacout, Martina Jakobi and I performed in Weimar, Germany in 2017.

You are also warmly invited to the webinar/book launch of Contemporary Arts Across Political Divides: Difficult Conversations, hosted online by Columbia University on September 24, 9 - 10 am New York time (EDT). Register for the webinar online here.

BRAINS + MINDS:   FUTURA CEREBRA + MINDSCAPES
Kathryn Gohmert & Yuni Lee
Artist Talk & Performance @Ro2 Art Gallery & EIGENHEIM Weimar

The mind and brain come together through two international solo exhibitions: FUTURA CEREBRA (Future Brains) of Kathryn Gohmert at EIGENHEIM in Weimar, Germany and MINDSCAPES of Yuni Lee at RO2 Art in Dallas, Texas. Both series and artists intersect on Feb 18 at an event live streamed at both galleries: Kathryn Gohmert performs Brain Chorus live at RO2 Art (amid the breathtaking MINDSCAPES paintings of Yuni Lee) on the finissage of her solo exhibition in Weimar. Yuni Lee and Kathryn Gohmert then both discuss in a live streamed artist talk, the different paths their work takes in exploring the brain and mind, and the goals, challenges and processes of their separate practices.

BRAIN CHORUS:
The video performance Brain Chorus mimes and explores the human journey, from birth into making connection, migration and then, finally, death. We navigate our lives in near chaos, constructing codes to turn nonsense into sense, finding and losing connection, hoping then aging then dying (before starting over, reborn into something else). The value of life is brought into sharp focus in this piece in appreciating death in its periphery. Original electronic score by Bakläxa. Special thanks to Johannes Heller.

Ro2 Art Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery located in Dallas' Tin District, just West of Downtown Dallas, that represents a diverse group of emerging, mid-career, and established contemporary artists. bauhaus-universität weimar [main building]

#entrequatroparedes2017

the living installation, entre quatro paredes, plays with intimacy, boundaries and borders by transporting itself through the public sphere by means of four interdisciplinary performers.

walls are no passive objects: as catalysts of change, walls actively reshape and restrict movement. acting as barriers, they can divide communities and isolate individuals, while also visibly and literally connecting strangers in intimate settings and serendipitous encounters.

simultaneously inclusive and excluding, occurring at a site and a “non-site,” entre quatro paredes transforms public spaces into immediate, private spaces within the context of four walls.

created and performed by kathryn gohmertmartina jacobiatsuko mochida and malak yacout saleh.

entre quatro paredes
 is part of summaery 2017, and is a satellite project of the exhibition, WITHINFOURWALLS.

seeds | hotel leipzig

hotel-leipzig-texture.jpg

this performance took place on 16 may, en route to the deutsche zentralbücherei für blinde from the leipzig hauptbahnhof.

roughly three million dandelion seeds were gathered in goethe’s park an der ilm. the seeds were relocated to a suitcase and then transported to leipzig by train. after carrying the suitcase to the entrance of the deutsche zentralbücherei für blinde [german central library for the blind], the suitcase was opened and the seeds handed out personally as ‘post’ to passing pedestrians.

as dandelion plants reportedly have medicinal properties which combat memory loss and decrease  the effects of dementia, the spreading of these seeds by way of this intimate, person-to-person method is intended to cure the repeating spells of memory loss human history continues to experience.

skill exchange | agora collective, images

the idea behind the skill exchange workshop, led this weekend by the individual artists collectively making up AFFECT’s current artists-in-residence group, was that each artist had a very specific technique / methodology which had been purposefully developed in their life, becoming fine-honed to the point of near superpower level.

with the ultimate design of passing on unusual skills to strangers and thereby empowering them, each artist devised the details of the specific workshop they felt most masterful and capable in leading.

topics included how to successfully avoid conversation on airplanes, traveling backwards at top speed, composing haikus, nordic rope-tying techniques [survival], how to successfully avoid paying rent, the art of climbing trees like a ninja assassin, and the ancient dutch technique of expertly cloning plants.

9 july, 2011 – august 31, 2011

opening reception: 9 july, 6 – 9 pm

what is loss, what is discovery, what is new and what is old? in the exhibition LOST AND FOUND, to be held at stage候台BACK gallery, a group of artists from around the world explore the issues of dislocation, re-discovery, transient life and re-invention of objects and ideas. these concepts bring the viewer and artwork into close collaboration within the space. following the eviction in may 2011 of around 70 artists and galleries from shanghai’s 696 weihai road studio complex, this arts diaspora has migrated to different spaces around the city. LOST AND FOUND is the first exhibition by stage候台BACK gallery in its new location of m50 district of shanghai: for this exhibition, the artwork as well as the gallery join in rediscovering and reinventing of old identities, transitioning between states of LOST AND FOUND.

“as one who in his journey breaks at noon,

though bent on speed, so here the archangel paus’d

betwixt the world destroy’d and world restor’d

if adam aught perhaps might interpose;

看亚当是否要插话;

then with transition sweet new speech resumes.

thus thou hast seen one world begin and end;

and man as from a second stock proceed.

much thou hast yet to see, but i perceave

又从第二个始祖开始繁衍;

thy mortal sight to faile; objects divine

must needs impaire and wearie human sense:

但我认为你们人的视力变得越来越差了;

henceforth what is to come i will relate,

thou therefore give due audience, and attend.

this second sours of men, while yet but few;

and while the dread of judgement past remains

fresh in thir mindes, fearing the deitie,

with some regard to what is just and right

shall lead thir lives and multiplie apace.”
