locus anamnesis

These paintings are studies of the stimuli by which we experience the world.

kathryn gohmert strips complex processes to their bones: breaking down meaning in diagrammatic space. Symbols create their own code as they point out roots and causes, mimicking the brain’s own process of sense-making on canvas.

The title, LOCUS ANAMNESIS, references Plato’s theory that simulation and stimulation are the only way for humans to bring back the knowledge we lost when born. We are unlearning in order to learn again; losing in order to recover.

A technique of mark making is layered onto itself in a Yin-Yang tension between negative and positive, flatness and depth.

An abundance of data is filtered into a language of white and black line.

“I am interested in the form information takes as it is stripped away and then recovered. Information is carved out in these works in a complication of reduction.

We are living in time of an abundance of information that can overwhelm and often paralyze us. I turn information back onto itself, carving out a meaning in color and form rather than words.”
